"I keep all the balls after my hat-tricks. The lads might be tired of signing them, but I’ll gladly take more!" said Harry Kane after another record-breaking night for Bayern Munich, where they became the first team to score nine goals in a single Champions League match.
The 31-year-old England captain's stellar performance in Bayern's 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb helped him hit multiple milestones:
- He surpassed Wayne Rooney to become the top English scorer in Champions League or European Cup history, with 33 goals in 45 games.
- Kane became the first English player to score four goals in a single Champions League match.
- He made history as the first English player to score a hat-trick or more for a non-English team in the Champions League.
- He became the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a Champions League or European Cup match.
- During the game, Kane netted his 50th, 51st, 52nd, and 53rd goals for Bayern Munich in what was only his 50th appearance for the club.
- This marked the 24th hat-trick of his career, and the fifth time he’s scored back-to-back trebles or more.
- He also recorded his ninth goal in five games for Bayern this season, on top of scoring twice in two appearances for England.
In addition to three penalties and a rebound after a saved shot from Joshua Kimmich, Kane also had a goal disallowed and narrowly missed a fifth by volleying over the bar late in the match. If he had converted that chance, he would have joined Erling Haaland as the only player to score five goals in a Champions League game.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, Kane shared: "My son Louis loves football, even though he's only three. I’ll take the match ball home and put it next to his bed – he’ll be happy to see it when he wakes up."
Reflecting on breaking the English Champions League record, he said: "Any time you're mentioned alongside Wayne Rooney, it means you're doing something right. He’s one of the greatest English players ever, and it’s a nice achievement to have."
