Minnesota Lynx Shock New York Liberty with 95-93 Overtime Victory in Game 1 of WNBA Finals

New York liberty win 1 of the WNBA finals

Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve has witnessed many memorable moments throughout her storied career, which includes winning four WNBA championships. But the Lynx’s remarkable comeback to defeat the New York Liberty 95-93 in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals is now among the top highlights.

“We’re the first team in WNBA playoff history to come back from a 15-point deficit in the final 5 minutes and win,” Reeve said. “That ranks high for sure. It really defines our team – getting through tough moments. We’ve been talking about being mentally tough and resilient. I’m thrilled we managed to hang in there.”

Minnesota mounted an 18-point comeback in the first half, and Napheesa Collier’s clutch jumper with 8.8 seconds left in overtime secured the win over New York on Thursday night. With the game tied, Collier faked in the lane and hit a shot, giving the Lynx the lead. New York had a chance to force another overtime, but Breanna Stewart’s layup attempt at the buzzer missed.

“The basketball gods were with us tonight,” said Courtney Williams, who led Minnesota with 23 points, including a four-point play with just 5.5 seconds left in regulation.

Minnesota now holds a 1-0 lead in the Finals after their thrilling Game 1 victory.
